  5. DOMAIN DATALINK, WHAT DOES IT DO?
  6.  
  7. Domain DataLink will allow users that call your BBS to directly transfer files
  8. to another user online, to play multiplayer MODEM games (including the popular
  9. DOOM, DOOM ][, Falcon, and more!) while online, and more.  Anything that can be
  10. done through a MODEM connection can be done via Domain DataLink through your
  11. BBS!  Basically what Domain DataLink does is make your BBS "invisible" to the
  12. callers within the link, to the callers connected in the link, it appears as
  13. though they had called each other directly with one advantage - the callers
  14. don't even need to be at the same baud rate in order to transfer files to each
  15. other through the DataLink!

  18. WHY WOULD USERS USE THE DATALINK RATHER THAN JUST CALLING SOMEONE DIRECTLY?

  20. This is a very common question, and the answer is simple.  Calling someone
  21. directly would require that you know the person you are going to transfer files
  22. to or play DOOM with.  With the DataLink, you don't need to know who you are
  23. playing DOOM with or transferring files to or whatever, your friend doesn't
  24. need to be at home for you to play a multi-player MODEM game, you can DataLink
  25. with a variety of people without needing to exchange phone numbers with a
  26. stranger.  Users can inform other users as to when they'll be online and
  27. available for DataLinking by simply posting a message.  Not only does the
  28. number of people to whom you can DataLink increase drastically because of this,
  29. but the ability for your users to make new friends increases as well.

  32. WHAT ADVANTAGES DOES DOMAIN DATALINK HAVE OVER "DOOM SERVER" TYPE BBS PROGRAMS?

  34. Domain DataLink has MANY advantages over these other "DOOM Server" type
  35. programs.  The MAIN advantage is COST (which is usually the most important).
  36. Domain DataLink doesn't require ANY additional hardware to run on your BBS, all
  37. that is required is a multinode BBS with a hard drive and at least 2 incoming
  38. phone lines.  Most of those other programs require an additional machine just
  39. to run their "server" software and on top of that require additional serial
  40. and/or network cards.  Domain DataLink costs up to $600.00 less than other
  41. "DOOM Server" software and up to thousands less when you include the cost of
  42. the additional hardware that they require.  Other companies also like to charge
  43. you based on the number of nodes you plan to have.  With Domain DataLink you
  44. pay the same price whether you are using one node or a hundred nodes.

  46. Another important advantage is that Domain DataLink is NOT BBS specific like a
  47. lot of other programs.  Domain DataLink can run on nearly any multi-node BBS
  48. software which uses XTRN.DAT, CHAIN.TXT, DOOR.SYS, DORINFO#.DEF, SFDOORS.DAT,
  49. or PCBOARD.SYS type dropfiles.

  51. Domain DataLink is NOT BBS program specific.  On most "DOOM Servers" your users
  52. can ONLY play Doom and support for additional capabilities will end up costing
  53. you more money.  Domain DataLink can do anything users could normally do if
  54. they called each others MODEM directly, which means they can play a variety of
  55. MODEM games as well as transfer files and more.

  58. CAN USERS PLAY FOUR PLAYER DOOM WITH THE DATALINK?

  60. Domain DataLink emulates a SERIAL connection which means that only two users
  61. can be connected together per link, because of this, only two player DOOM can
  62. be accomplished using the DataLink.  This doesn't mean that only two users on
  63. your BBS can be linked, your BBS can have several two player links going on at
  64. the same time.

  67. IS DOMAIN DATALINK FAST?

  69. A two player game of DOOM will run FASTER through the DataLink (nearly as fast
  70. as if the players had called each other directly) than through a "DOOM Server"
  71. type program (and MUCH faster than a "DOOM Server" running a three or four
  72. player game).  Two users transferring a compressed file through the DataLink
  73. can acheive baud rates of nearly 1700cps @ 14.4k and nearly 3300cps @ 28.8k.

  76. IS DOMAIN DATALINK DIFFICULT TO USE OR INSTALL?

  78. No.  Domain DataLink is VERY easy to setup and install.  It installs just like
  79. any BBS door and quick setup instructions are included for various BBS
  80. packages.  For your users there is a help file when they enter the Domain
  81. DataLink program that explains how to transfer files through the link, how to
  82. play DOOM through the link, and the concept of playing other modem games and
  83. using other modem based programs through the link.
